Magazine journalists research and write news articles and features for a wide variety of publications.
You may find it useful to have a degree in a subject like journalism or media. This will help you learn about the magazine industry and develop the skills you'll need as a journalist. You could also do a postgraduate course in journalism. Some of these are accredited by the Professional Publishers Association.
You'll usually need 2 to 3 A-Levels, or equivalent, for a degree. You'll need a degree in a relevant subject for postgraduate study.
Some colleges offer the Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Journalism and courses in Shorthand, accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). You'll usually need 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent.
Volunteering
Competition for jobs is strong, especially with the better-known magazines. You'll find it useful to have examples of your published work in a portfolio. You'll also need practical experience, which you could get by:

With experience you may be able to progress to an editing position or move into another area like newspaper journalism, radio or TV. You could go freelance and write for various publications, or become a staff writer.
Camera operators record images for film, television, commercials and online.
Sound technicians are responsible for recording the voices and background noise on TV and film shoots.
Public relations (PR) directors manage communications campaigns and strategy for their organisation or clients.
Pattern cutters create pattern templates based on drawings from a fashion designer to make clothes.
Textile designers create fabric designs and patterns for woven, knitted and printed materials for clothes and interior furnishings.
Fashion models promote clothing and accessory brands at fashion events and in magazines and digital media.

Candidates will undertake four-weeks of employability workshops with Catch22, learning about the tech industry and employability skills, whilst networking and engaging in projects with other participants. During the workshops, participants attend a session run by Microsoft employees, where they will have the opportunity to ask them questions and hear about their careers so far.Following the four-week workshops, candidates will work with a tech-industry-specialist Career Coach to tailor their CVs, cover letters and interview skills, finding and applying for jobsapprenticeships within tech. Once participants are in employment, we offer in-work support for 6-months.ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: -Not in work or education-Between 18-30-Interested in techcomputer literate-Access to a computer or laptop to join the sessions
