Doing an internship during the summer of your second or last but one year at university can also help you gain useful knowledge and skills. Your university careers department may have links with wildlife or conservation organisations in the UK or overseas.

Volunteering
Volunteering in conservation work is a good way to strengthen your application for university courses. Many opportunities will go unadvertised, so you may need to contact organisations direct.

You'll usually specialise in an area like ecology (animal environments), herpetology (reptiles), entomology (insects), ornithology (birds), parasitology (parasites) or paleozoology (fossil remains). You could work in sectors like agriculture, conservation, pharmaceuticals or for the Government.

Agronomists advise farmers on soil management and crop production.
Animal technicians look after animals in research laboratories.
Vets diagnose and treat sick or injured animals.
Meat hygiene inspectors make sure food processing plants and slaughterhouses follow safety and hygiene standards.
Veterinary physiotherapists work with injured animals, or animals with movement problems, to help reduce pain and improve their health.
Riding centre managers plan and run the centre's activities, manage staff and develop the business.
