Hello, I Am Zoya

I decided to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain that hands on, real work experience that you cannot get by doing the traditional university route. And I’m someone who learns by doing which meant that the apprenticeship route was perfect for me.

I decided to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain that hands on, real work experience that you cannot get by doing the traditional university route. And I’m someone who learns by doing which meant that the apprenticeship route was perfect for me. I also realised that experience you have is more valuable than getting a degree because when you apply to jobs they look at your experience over anything else and even a lot of entry level jobs now require a couple years experience which was a further reason why I wanted to do an apprenticeship as it gives me that experience and allows me to start my career journey.

My advice would be to do your own research on apprenticeships and see what they can bring for you. I would also advice to let go of the idea that getting a degree is everything as in this competitive economy, it does not mean much anymore and will not put you ahead of others. It’s important to keep your mind open and let go of any misconceptions or stereotypes that you may have and realise what a great opportunity apprenticeships are and what a fantastic way it is to get into the professional world at such a young age and start building your career.

I am a cross-functional apprentice which means that I get to do different rotations in various job roles within Cisco so what I do day-to-day differs depending on the rotation I’m doing. Currently, I’m working as a network design engineer on a project with one of the top oil companies where I am reviewing and updating their network design drawings. As it is a customer project, demands do change, which means I am often in virtual meetings with my team discussing what the latest update is so we are all conducting our work to the same standard. I previously spent 3 months working as a technical solutions architect in the Cisco Umbrella team where I learnt about how Cisco Umbrella works and learnt how to deliver demos to customers. I had to attend calls with customers who were interested in purchasing Cisco Umbrella and we would explain the technicalities of the product and show them a demo. As I am interested in technology I would like to explore more tech roles within Cisco, such as cyber security and networking roles.
