Recycling officers promote recycling in the community, and run local recycling schemes.
Many employers will ask for a higher national diploma or degree in waste management or environmental sciences, accredited by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. You'll usually need 1 or 2 A-Levels, or equivalent, for a higher national diploma. You'll need 2 to 3 A-Levels, or equivalent, for a degree.
Paid or unpaid experience working in waste management, or on local recycling or environmental projects, can help you get started if you do not have a higher education qualification.

With further study you could become a chartered waste manager. You could also move into freelance work as an environmental consultant. You may be able to apply for chartered environmentalist status.
Arboricultural officers manage and maintain trees for local councils and arboricultural contractors.
Gardeners grow plants and look after them in private and public green spaces.
Forestry workers manage trees, plants and the environment in forests and woodland.
Tree surgeons carry out tree work including planting, felling, care and maintenance, and hazard assessments.
Pest control technicians identify and get rid of pests like rats, mice and cockroaches.
Palaeontologists study the history of life on Earth through fossils.
