  • What are your interests outside of work?

Outside of work I have many interests and hobbies. Aside from meeting up with friends and family, I always take time to work on myself. I regularly work out at my local gym, meditate 3 times a week, am self-teaching myself how to play the piano through YouTube videos, and I read books of all genres. I also watch too much TV but like to think my competitive boxing helps this. I love travelling and my goal is to visit every single country at least once!

Hello, I Am Lucas

I wanted to pursue an apprenticeship as university just wasn't for me.

Tell us more about your experience

My role as a Data Analyst in the Commercial Intelligence team means I help the business to identify and communicate data-driven insights to allow managers, stakeholders, and other executives in my company to make informed decisions. My main responsibility is to use statistical tools to interpret data sets, paying particular attention to trends and patterns that could be valuable for diagnostic and predictive analytical efforts according to business needs. As part of this, I also prepare reports for stakeholders.

The most exciting project I’ve worked on is when I helped to redesign an existing dashboard on Power BI for a global product that we sell to clients across the world. This dashboard helps the business understand more about areas like financial information, market distribution, product flow, revenue forecast and loads more. My proudest moment at Vodafone was presenting my very first analysis to the commercial intelligence department – it was so rewarding.

“If you’re considering an apprenticeship, do it! You’ll get invaluable experience!”

I chose an apprenticeship as I didn’t really enjoy school and I knew early on that university was not for me. However, that didn’t stop me from trying to find a method of learning that I enjoyed. The apprenticeship scheme helped me realise this goal. I was able to take knowledge from the classroom and apply this to real-world scenarios. This really gave me the sense of achievement that I was lacking from school.

I have received total support in all aspects from my employer. When I first started, I had to learn from the ground up, and never felt judged or that I couldn’t ask for help. My training providers have also given me great support – they make me feel like there’s no task I can’t complete! After my apprenticeship, I hope to have gained enough knowledge and experience to go on and run my own data team and become a manager. My current manager is so supportive of my future goals and is helping me by passing on all the knowledge he’s gained over his long career.
