Description
On this apprenticeship, you’ll spend two years investing in yourself by developing grounds maintenance experience, along with horticulture knowledge covering topics such as plants, soil science, vegetation, machinery and environmental best practice.

What you’ll be getting up to
As an Environmental Services Apprentice, you’ll provide a first-class grounds maintenance service and associated works to our customer schemes and adjoining areas.
A day in the life might look a bit like this…
- Working alongside a fab team of experienced environmental services professionals
- Planting flower meadows
- Renovating grassed areas
- Community based duties such as minor repair/maintenance programs
As well as all that..
- You’ll attend college, completing and passing all related coursework and exams for the Horticulture Level 2 Apprenticeship qualification
- You’ll provide excellent customer service - we expect you to treat customers with respect, kindness and a friendly face!
- You’ll work effectively in your own team and with other teams across Yorkshire Housing
- You’ll carry out your work to the highest standards and comply with our health and safety regulations
- You’ll produce accurate and timely information/records on the work you’ve completed

To be considered for this apprenticeship, you must hold the following qualifications and personal qualities:
- GCSE Grade C/Level 4 in English and Maths
- Enthusiasm for grounds maintenance
- A passion to learn, and grow your career in Horticulture (work experience in a similar role is a bonus but not essential!)
- Good practical skills with a methodical approach to work
- Driven and self-motivated
- Passionate about doing the right thing, not the easy thing
- Ability to manage own workload and meet deadlines
- Excellent teamwork skills
As part of this role, you’re expected to attend college one day a week or for block release and complete the required assignments, along with any associated tests.

Good Communication skills with customers and colleagues
Confidence using hand tools and machinery.
An understanding of Health and safety in the workplace.
Maths and English A-E,2+ or equivalent.
Applicants may be asked to submit copies of certificates or attend a Shipley College skills assessment.
Horticulture or Landscape Operative, with Maths and English functional skills if required.
Training by day release at Shipley College with onsite assessment.
Physical fitness as many tasks are demanding
Willingness to learn new skills and develop.
The employer is looking to offer a permanent position on a successful completion of the apprenticeship.
