You'll normally need a foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree to become a design engineer. You could choose from subjects like:

You may be able to start by taking a product design and development engineer degree apprenticeship. You'll usually need 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and A-Levels, or equivalent, for a degree apprenticeship.
You can apply directly for jobs if you have experience and qualifications in a particular branch of engineering, for example mechanical, aerospace or energy engineering.
