  • What are your interests outside of work?

I'm an avid reader and writer and a big Dungeons and Dragons player, I'm working on writing my own campaign. I'm also into fitness and wellbeing, but mainly running, and I'm very big on speciality coffee too. I like to try and get tuition in subjects outside of computer science. So, I'm currently learning French, plan on learning Spanish (and potentially Russian) and hopefully to play the piano – singing and dancing to come at a later date...

Hello, I Am Andrew

Pursuing an apprenticeship seemed like a no-brainer to me!

Tell us more about your experience

I decided to pursue an apprenticeship as it meant I could get a free degree alongside some great work experience, and a guaranteed job in an industry I’m really interested in. The apprenticeship is really difficult. I’m currently in a technology consulting placement so it’s quite usual to switch between the different projects for a better breadth of experience.

But I’d say this year the most interesting project I worked on involved an assignment helping a multi-national bank implement new EU legislation across all ten of their European branches. It gave me insight into how banks operate, and how new laws are helping fintech start-ups. As of yet, the proudest moment I’ve had within my apprenticeship was when I won an award for taking part in the most recruitment events in a year out of all the apprentices on course. It was great to see my hard work recognised.

During my apprenticeship, I’ve had great pastoral support throughout – this also extended over into the placement itself where my colleagues have answered any queries whenever they arise. In the process, I’ve learnt loads of great skills. I now feel much more confident when presenting, have developed my analytical thinking talents, and have really improved my organisational and time-keeping skills by having to conduct myself in the workplace. At the end of my apprenticeship, I hope to stay employed within the cyber-security division at PwC.
